Digital Downloads - A Step by Step Guide

Click here to make sure your PC is ready to download music, films and TV from Tesco Digital

1. Find

I know what I'm looking for

Type the name of the artist, album, song, TV show or film - making sure it's spelled correctly - into the I'm Looking For box in the top right corner and then click the Go button. We'll search our entire library to find the title you're after and then display the results. For music, click on the category you're interested in (Albums, Singles and so on) to see more details. If it's an album or single, click the cover or name to see the track listing. If it's an individual track, you'll see it displayed in the middle of the screen. You can listen to a 30 second clip of any track free of charge by clicking the Play button to the left of its name. For films and TV shows, you can arrange the results in various ways (use the 'Sort by' drop down list to organize results by popularity or alphabetical order). Some titles may appear in both TV and Film categories and you can switch between them using the links above the results list. If there’s more than one page of results, use the arrow keys to move forwards or backwards. Click on any title to find out more or play the trailer.

I want to download songs by a specific artist or band or find shows starring my favourite actor or by my favourite director

Type their name into the I'm Looking For box and then open the drop down menu next to it. Select from All Products, Music, Film or TV to narrow the search then click the Go button. Depending on what you’re searching for, the results appear under one or more tabs – Music, Film and TV – just click these to move between them. For music, results will be listed along the top by Artists, Albums, Singles, Tracks and Videos; underneath you'll see the artist in their own featured panel (along with other artists they've collaborated with). Click their name to open the Artist Profile page or any of the other links in the panel to go straight to their albums, singles, or track listings. From the Artist Profile page, use the tabs to browse Albums, Singles and Tracks. Albums and Singles are displayed in a carousel ordered by date of release; you can use the arrows to scroll through them. Click on any album or single in the carousel to see a track list and further information about the release. You can listen to a 30 second clip of any track free of charge by clicking the Play button next to it. For films and TV, we’ll display all of the titles in our TV and film library that feature the person you’ve searched for, so it’s easy to track down your favourites. Use the page buttons to scroll through the results or sort them alphabetically or by popularity using the drop down menu.

I like a particular kind of music, TV show or film

Use our Genre categories to find what you’re looking for. If you want songs, make sure the Music tab at the top is selected and hover the cursor over the Genres menu. Click the one you're interested in to see music in that genre. Here you'll find the Top 10 downloads in that genre along with new albums, singles and tracks; we've also highlighted albums that are either current favourites or all-time classics. Alternatively, mouse through the carousel for more ideas or check out our playlists - where available - for other suggestions. If you fancy watching something, go to the main TV & Film page. About half way down are two tabs that say Film and TV. Just along from them on the title bar you’ll see a heading called ‘Please select a Genre’. Clicking the arrow next to it opens a drop down list. Select a genre from this list and we’ll display a selection of our top TV and film titles in that category for you to browse. Currently, genres include Action/Adventure, Children’s, Comedy, Documentaries, Drama, Horror, Thriller & Mystery, Musicals, Music, Romance, Sci-Fi/Fantasy, Sports and Westerns & War.

Start at the Home page and check out our highlights in the centre of the screen. Click on a cover, and then flip it over to find out more about the album and artist. From here you can browse New Releases where we list the latest albums and singles, our Charts, featuring the top 40 album and single downloads, or explore 15 different musical genres from Blues to World Music. Alternatively, click the News tab to read the latest music stories. The site is designed to offer plenty of opportunities to wander off the beaten track in search of something new and exciting.

2. Buy

I want to choose an album, a film or a single TV show

For music, just click the Get Album button. All music downloads are now available in MP3 format only. These files will play on any PC, MAC or portable music player, including Apple iPods. Next click the Buy button to add your choice to your Shopping Basket. To add a film or TV show to your basket, click either the Buy Film button or for individual TV shows, the Get It button - if it’s part of a season like Lost, click the See Episodes button to see individual shows first.

I want to choose a song

Each song has a Buy Track button next to it. Click this to add it to your Shopping Basket. (Note that because of licensing agreements, some tracks can't be purchased individually - you may have to buy the whole album but it's still cheaper than the high street). Remember that tracks are now only available in MP3 format. If you have previously purchased WMA files that you wish to convert to MP3, please click here for assistance. Please be aware that converting from WMA to MP3 is a one-off process and may not be reversed. Also, due to the higher bit rate of our MP3 tracks, file sizes will be larger. This means that, depending on the model or its capacity, fewer songs may fit on your portable player. Once converted, your new MP3 tracks will replace the WMA versions, which will no longer be available for download. For some WMA tracks there may be no MP3 available, but don’t worry, the WMA versions will remain in your account to be downloaded as normal.

3. Download

I'm ready to download my purchases

First we'll check to see if you've got the Tesco Download Manager - this is a free program to help you manage your purchases (and even re-download titles that get lost or damaged).

If you don't have the Tesco Download Manager:

  1. Click the Install Tesco Download Manager button (or download it here). You may see a security warning; this is nothing to worry about.
  2. Click the Run button
  3. You may see another security warning. Again this is nothing to worry about; it's just your PC being cautious.
  4. Click the Run button again
  5. After reading the license agreement, click the I Agree button
  6. The Tesco Download Manager will be copied to your PC
  7. Click the Finish button.
  8. Click the Continue button and then proceed to the next section

Something went wrong. One of my purchases has been lost or damaged when I was downloading it or afterwards; I either can't find it or I can't play it.

Don't worry. One of the reasons we ask you to set up an account with us is so we can track your purchases in case something goes wrong. Remember, the following steps only apply to WMV downloads – for assistance with lost or damaged VoD or MP3 files, please contact customer services who will try their best to resolve the problem

  1. Simply go back to the Tesco Entertainment site, click on the My Account link at the top and sign in if you need to.
  2. Click the View Order History link in the panel on the left.
  3. The next screen displays a summary of the all items you've ever bought from us. Use the page numbers at the top to display older or newer orders. When you find the order you want, click on its order number to open the Order Details page.
  4. Scroll down to find the item you want to download again. Notice that each item is assigned a number of licenses indicating how many times it may be downloaded again. When this number reaches zero all your licenses are used up and you'll have to buy the track again.
  5. Click the Download button and the Download Manager will begin downloading it to your PC.
  6. The next time you visit the Order Details page, you'll see that you've used up one of your licenses by re-downloading the track.

4. Play

Before continuing, we recommend you make sure you have the latest version of Windows Media Player - it's version 11. Click here for instructions.

I want to play a song, album, TV show or film I've downloaded

  1. Click on the Windows Start button. Choose All Programs and select Windows Media Player from the menu. The program keeps an eye on your My Music or Music folders (depending on whether you use XP or Vista), finds any music, films and TV shows you’ve downloaded and adds them to your music library.
  2. When you first buy a music track or a show from us, we create a Tesco folder inside the My Music/Music folder. Then, we create separate folders for Film&TV and Music so Media Player can quickly find your purchases. To add the items you've just bought, click the Library button and choose Add to Library. (You only have to do the following set-up once, after which Media Player automatically adds new purchases).
  3. When the dialogue box opens, click the Advanced Options button.
  4. Next, click the Add button.
  5. If you're using Windows XP, click on My Documents, then the My Music folder. Scroll down and click the Tesco folder, then choose either the Film&TV or Music folder and click OK.
  6. If you're using Windows Vista, click the Main User folder, then the Music folder, scroll down and click the Tesco folder. Next click either the Film&TV or Music folder and click OK.
  7. Finally, back at the Add to Library dialogue box, click the OK button to finish.
  8. Media Player will then add any songs, TV shows or films in the Tesco folder to its library.
  9. When it's done, click the Close button.
  10. Use the categories on the left to display the contents by Artist, Actors, Album, Song, Genre, star rating and so on.
  11. Find your purchases in Windows Media Player, click the title then click the Play button.

Remember: VoD purchase are only available to watch for 48 hours after pressing play for the first time and must be watched within 30-days of downloading.

How do Media Player's controls work?

The controls are very similar to a CD or DVD player.

  1. Click the big Play button to play an album, a track, TV show, film or a music playlist (see below). Click the Pause button to temporarily stop playback.
  2. The arrows either side of the Play button move back and forward one track at a time (for music) or to the previous or next title (for films and TV shows).
  3. The button with the crossed arrows will 'shuffle' a music playlist into random order. The circling arrow button repeats whatever is being played.
  4. Drag the volume slider to the left or right to adjust the volume; click the little speaker icon to mute or unmute the sound.
  5. For more information, press the F1 key on your keyboard to open the program's Help file.

Windows Media Player calls these "playlists".

  1. Make sure you've got some music in the library and then click the Create Playlist link at the top of the left hand column in the player window.
  2. Type in a name for the playlist and press Return. Media Player creates an empty playlist on the right of the window. Simply scroll through the library, find the tracks, albums or artists you want to add (use the categories on the left of the player window to choose how you want the library to display them) then drag them over to the playlist with your mouse and drop them there.
  3. Add as many tracks as you like and when you've finished, click the Save Playlist button.

To listen to your compilation, find it in the playlists on the left hand side of the player window and double click to load it into the main window.

I want to make a CD to play at home or in the car

  1. To create a CD, load Windows Media Player, put a blank recordable CD into the drive and click the large Burn button on the toolbar. This creates an empty 'Burn List' on the right of the screen.
  2. Drag and drop tracks, albums or playlists (see above) onto this list to create your compilation. You can arrange tracks however you like by dragging them around with the mouse.
  3. Check how full the disc is getting by watching the gauge at the top - CDs generally hold about 80 minutes of music.
  4. When you're done, click the Start Burn button at the bottom of the Burn List window.
  5. When it's finished, the CD will eject, ready to play.

I want to add CDs I already own to my music library on the PC

  1. Pop your music CD into the drive.
  2. Depending on how your copy of Windows is set up, you may see a dialogue box offering to rip the CD using Media Player. Clicking Yes will start the process automatically.
  3. If you don't see the dialogue box, load Media Player and it will recognize the audio CD. If you're connected to the Internet it will also find both the track listing and the cover artwork, displaying them in the main window.
  4. Click the Rip button at the top, make sure there is a tick beside each of the tracks you want to copy to your PC then click the Start Rip button. Media Player does the rest.
  5. When it's done, click the Library button and then click the Album or Artist category in the list on the left to locate your newly ripped CD. In this way you can combine the CDs you already own with new song and album downloads from Tesco Digital to create a complete digital music library.

I want to copy music to a portable music player

  1. Some players, such as Apple iPods, come with their own software and instructions for ripping and burning CDs as well as organizing your music library.
  2. Many others act just like USB keys - the little chewing gum-sized file storage devices that plug into a PC. When you plug them in, they open a window and you can just navigate to your music folder and drag and drop songs onto them however you like. This is a quick and simple process but you may not be able to control the order in which the tracks play back.

I want to copy music to my iPod

  1. All MP3 songs from Tesco Digital are compatible with your iPod - We no longer offer music downloads in WMA format. If you want to convert any of your previously downloaded WMA files to MP3, please click here for assistance.*
  2. To add tracks to your iPod, you have to get your music into iTunes first. This is the software designed by Apple to get songs on and off your iPod.
  3. To add a single song to iTunes, go to the File menu and choose Add File to Library. In the dialogue box, double click the My Music folder (or Music folder if you're using Windows Vista) then double click on the Tesco folder inside that. Find the song, select it then click the Open button.
  4. To add a number of songs (or a whole album) click File, choose Add Folder to Library, navigate to the Tesco folder and then select the folder containing the music you want to add. Click OK to add the songs to the library.
  5. Occasionally, songs or albums will be added without artwork. To add this, just right click on the song in the main window and choose Get Album Artwork.

* Please be aware that converting from WMA to MP3 is a one-off process and may not be reversed.

I want to copy a film or TV show onto a portable video player/my mobile phone/another PC

Currently, it’s not possible to copy a film or TV show from your computer onto anything else. Our films and TV shows are compressed but they’re still too high quality to play back on portable devices. Technology changes very quickly, so it’s worth checking back here from time to time.

I want to make a copy of a film or TV show on a DVD

Due to copyright laws, this is not possible.

I want to synch my music library with a portable player like you can with an iPod and iTunes

If you bought your portable music player in the last 12 months, there's a very good chance it will sync with the songs stored on your PC using Windows Media Player - the process may vary slightly depending on how much music your player can store. Some of the bigger ones can sync entire libraries so both the PC and the player always have all your songs. If you have a smaller player you can either choose the albums, songs and playlists you prefer to synchronies or you can have Media Player's Shuffle feature pick them for you. The first time you connect your player, you'll be taken through a simple set up process. For more information, open Windows Media Player, click the Sync button and choose Help with Sync.
